Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox for August 23, shows why "Unless you have explicit links to product pages from article content, users who visit articles directly from search engines might never realize that you sell related products."
It goes on to say that although "informative websites that are rich in content and thin in commercial messages" benefit users, "who are more interested in facts than hype,
many of these sites are so focused on providing information that they lose the sale."
It also goes on to recommend that content writers "strive for a happy compromise between providing informative content and asking for the order. If you don't mention your product, you'll attract tons of freeloaders, but no business."
