Google just about doubled the pages in its index to 8 billion. Search engine marketers have been antsy in the past few months, seeing Google bots running about the web hoovering up information. They feared that this could portend a major algorithm shift in Google, wreaking havoc among their clients' search engine rankings.
Instead, the new index appears to be a larger version of the old one, announced the night before Microsoft was hoping to garner additional PR for its own search efforts by putting up another Microsoft Search test site.
Google ranked No. 1 in search queries in August, followed by Yahoo and MSN. AOL network and Ask Jeeves rank fourth and fifth in search queries.
